Debunking ADHD Myths and Facts!

Lets talk ADHD - breaking down myths, answering some common questions, and

learning new stuff together. Whether you have ADHD or not, stick around. It’s good stuff to know, especially since you never know who you might cross paths with in your life or at work.

Statement 1: ADHD is Just a Childhood Disorder?

MYTH: ADHD can and often does continue into adulthood. Many adults struggle with ADHD and may experience challenges with organisation, time management, and attention in their personal and professional lives.

Statement 2: Is ADHD Overdiagnosed?!

FACT: This statement may hold some truth. The diagnosis of ADHD has indeed increased over the past few decades, sparking debates among professionals about overdiagnosis. Some argue that heightened awareness and better diagnostic methods account for the increase, while others believe ADHD is diagnosed too frequently, potentially overshadowing other underlying issues.

ADHD isn’t just a today thing. Writings from way back in 1798 by Sir Alexander Crichton describe something pretty similar to it. Old news, but still so relevant!

Statement 3: People with ADHD are Often Creative and Think Outside the Box?

FACT: Yes, many individuals with ADHD possess high levels of creativity and can be innovative thinkers. They may approach problems and challenges from unique angles and come up with inventive solutions. However, it is essential to remember that ADHD and its impacts can vary widely among individuals.

Statement 4: Are All Kids with ADHD Hyperactive?

MYTH: Not all children with ADHD display hyperactive behavior. There are three types of ADHD:

1. Predominantly Inattentive Presentation - This is where focus flies out the window. Folks with this type might easily lose track of conversations, misplace things, and find it tough to complete tasks.

2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation - Picture energy in overdrive. This type comes with restlessness, a big helping of fidgets, and impulsive actions without a pause button.

3. Combined Presentation - A bit of this and a bit of that. It combines the inattention of the first type with the hyperactivity and impulsiveness of the second.

Some children might struggle more with attention and focus, without exhibiting hyperactive symptoms.

Myth 5: People with ADHD are Just Lazy?

MYTH: ADHD is not related to laziness!! People with ADHD often put significant effort into trying to manage their symptoms. Challenges like inattention or impulsivity are not a choice but are related to differences in brain function.

A study in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology (2019) highlighted that people with ADHD aren’t slackers; their brains are actively wrestling with maintaining focus and managing mental tasks. It's not about effort; it’s a neural tussle!
